A surprising number of people are interested in the future of the planet and environmental protection, and they are aware that environmental problems affect their own lives and the fate of future generations, according to a survey commissioned by the Alteo energy group.
On average, a resident can list 12 environmentally damaging factors, with deforestation, climate change and air pollution considered to be the most serious problems, according to a nationwide, representative survey conducted in January. Although different demographic groups have different views on their importance, 80 percent of them agree that environmental protection is the shared responsibility of the entire society.
92 percent of the respondents admit to being interested in environmental protection, and 82 percent of them see that environmental problems have a direct impact on their lives. According to 63 percent of those surveyed, the fate of future generations depends on environmental protection, but nearly a third of them are not convinced that this is currently one of the most important tasks of people.
According to the results, 87 percent of respondents are worried about climate change, and 31 percent of them are very worried about the possible consequences. This is especially true for Budapest residents and university graduates, as they are the most aware of the factors endangering the planet.
The research also looked for answers to the most well-known environmental problems. Most of them highlighted the more general or directly affecting people, such as the waste of food, water, energy and clothes, or global warming.
The top three things residents do for a greener future are: selective waste collection, avoiding energy, water and food waste, and cutting back on shopping. The use of renewable energy occurs in every tenth household, while 4 percent of respondents drive an electric or hybrid car. The most active environmentalists are over 50 and those with a higher education.
