An organization sponsored by YouTube honored the company's CEO, Susan Wojcicki, at an event sponsored by the video sharing portal.
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki received the Freedom Forum Institute's Free Expression Award at a virtual event sponsored by YouTube, the online video platform owned by Google.
In the interview with him, Wojcicki talked about how much the website he manages has already done for freedom of speech, and highlighted its positive effects.
"I've seen the real benefits of free speech and the representation of people with different backgrounds and perspectives, and the freedom we can't take for granted," said YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki.
"We really need to make sure we protect them in every way we can."
He also explained that since the beginning of their operation, adult, hateful and dangerous content has not been allowed.
After Wojcicki's statement, the internet exploded almost immediately, and social media sites were flooded with skeptical and cynical posts.
Some people thought the expression was funny and that it was unbelievable that the site promotes freedom of speech, which is otherwise full of censorship.
Others were outraged that Wojcicki was patting herself on the back and that YouTube was honoring her.
