The Roman Catholic bishop's palace in Nagyvárad, which has been owned by the church for almost three years and is still under renovation, opened its doors to the public with an exhibition of church art on Saturday.
The ownership of the palace, which is considered to be the most significant and complex baroque monument in Southeastern Europe and Romania, was returned to the church in 2004 after eight years of litigation, but it had to wait another 15 years before it could actually take possession of the building. The bishopric saw to the renovation of the building with the support of the Hungarian state, after the conditions in Romania were changed in such a way that it could not apply for EU funding. The ecclesiastical art exhibition was organized in the renovated part of the building.
In his celebratory speech János Árpád Potápi , the State Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office responsible for national policy, mentioned that the fact that one part of the building of the bishop's palace has regained its former glory and purpose shows the survival of the storms of the last century and the strengthening of the last decade.
He expressed his hope that the recovery and opening of the building will be the beginning of a fruitful era.
