The project "Cooperation for the reopening of the Bálint Balassa Museum in Esztergom and the Esterházy Castle in Zelíz" is implemented within the framework of the INTERREG Slovakia-Hungary program.
The draft is being created with the support of the European Union, the Governments of Hungary and Slovakia and the Zzelíz Municipality. 85% of the total budget of 1,492,947.75 euros - 1,269,005.58 euros - is provided by the European Union as a non-refundable grant.
The aim of the project is to renovate the Esterházy Castle in Zzelíz and the Balassa Bálint Museum in Esztergom, which is part of the Hungarian National Museum.
The exhibition halls and warehouses of the Balassa Bálint Museum in Esztergom are located at Pázmány Péter u. It is housed in house 13. The old main street of "Víziváros" on the territory of the former archbishop is lined with medieval houses.
The 13-story baroque-style building was the old seat of Esztergom County. Presumably, Ágos Keresztély, the archbishop of Esztergom, built the ornate building on medieval foundations after the recapture of the city.
The smaller palace served the purposes of the county between 1714 and 1805 under the archbishopric of Esztergom. The renovation of the building has been due for years. The small Esterházy Castle was built in 1720 as a summer home in Zselíz near Garam. The period residence consists of four small wings and a central inner courtyard. The lords of the castle hosted many of the celebrities of the time at their fashionable resting place.

The state of both monuments included in the project is critical, none of them can be visited. The buildings have been waiting for renovation for decades, the missed maintenance would be due for a long time. Unfortunately, neither the Hungarian National Museum nor the Zselíz Municipality had the resources that would have enabled the restoration of the beautiful historic buildings or the fulfillment of their cultural and touristic functions.
"Zelíz started to develop again after several decades of stomping around in one place. In recent years, we have carried out many developments both in the field of building preservation and infrastructure. New jobs have been created, to which we are preparing to respond with intensive housing development. In addition, we have not forgotten our historical values either; we looked for the possibility of renovating the castle, which we found in this construction. After the installation of the attic, the part of the building also finds its function. It will serve as a home for exhibitions and various events. It is important to us that our castle not only stands as a historical bastion in the middle of the Zzelíz park, but also functions as a cultural center for the pleasure of all of us," said András Juhász, mayor of the city of Zzelíz.
The project will be implemented by December 31, 2022.
