The European Football Association (UEFA) has launched an investigation into discriminatory gestures in connection with the Hungary-France European Championship group match, which was held at the Puskás Arena on Saturday.

According to UEFA's announcement on Sunday, the procedure is being carried out because when the ball went to Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema, many Hungarian fans reacted with boos and racist shouts.

It was not revealed what exactly happened or what was said, but the disciplinary committee will examine what was said at the Hungarian-Portuguese and Hungarian-French matches.

Deutsche Welle: Neo-Nazis are the largest group of Hungarian football fans

In Hungary, fan culture is dominated by right-wing ultras and hooligan groups, who have never made a secret of their anti-Semitic and anti-Gypsy views, reports Deutsche Welle. On the German portal, the supporter group Carpathian Brigade was named separately, which it called a neo-Nazi ultra group made up of members of extreme right-wing communities.

In the article, Hungarian fans were addressed in connection with the anti-pedophile law. As an example, anti-LGBT flags were waved and homophobic chants were chanted in the Hungarian audience during the Hungarian-Portuguese match, although no real evidence or picture of this is shown in the article. In addition, it is also mentioned that some of the Hungarian fans were strongly opposed to kneeling before the matches, which several teams made a practice of as a stand against racism.
