A grizzly bear terrorized a camper in the Alaskan wilderness for a week until the injured man was finally found and rescued, reports the BBC.
On Friday, the crew of the US Coast Guard helicopter noticed the message asking for help written on the top of the man's cabin, and then saw the camper waving the white flag. The helicopter was on its way to a mission when it was forced to deviate from its route due to weather conditions, and the crew noticed the SOS signal.
Jared Carbajal , the man was attacked by the grizzly, after which the predator returned every night to the campsite, 65 kilometers from Nome. The man, who suffered injuries to his chest and legs, had not slept for days. He couldn't call for help on the phone. According to The New York Times, the camper had a gun, but it was almost out of ammunition and the door to the cabin was broken.
The authorities did not release the man's identity, but said that he is in his late fifties or early sixties and that his friends reported that he did not arrive home on time from the tour. The man was taken to hospital, his injuries are not life-threatening.
According to the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Service, although the US state is "bear country", it rarely happens that the animals behave aggressively.
