"Szeged mirror carp" has become a protected name in the EU. This is the fourth Hungarian freshwater fish name, after the previously registered "Szilvásvárad trout", "Akasztói sikiponty" and "Balaton fish", which has won EU protection, contributing to the popularization of fish consumption, the Ministry of Agriculture says in its announcement.
The protected geographical indication "Szeged mirror carp" refers to live fish bred from the state-recognized species of Szeged mirror carp, as well as its meat. Its breeding area is Lake Fehér, located north of the city of Szeged, as a connected fish pond system of 141 lakes with an area of 2,000 hectares and built on the natural catchment basin of the Southern Great Plain.
THE BELLY SIDE OF THE "SZEGED MIRROR POINT" IS YELLOW, AND THE SCALES ARE MIRROR BACK. THE MEAT IS RED, FRIENDLY, HIGH PROTEIN CONTENT, LOW FAT AND TASTY.
"Szeged mirror carp" serves as an essential ingredient of the famous Szeged fish soup.
