The time of nation-states has not passed, they continue to play an important role in the world. At the same time, the conviction that we are standing at an ideological crossroads is getting stronger in our country, and I think in Europe as well. And I really like the fact that Hungary stands up so hard in this regard, said Jeff Sessions, the former US President Donald Trump's Justice Minister, in an interview with Magyar Nemzet. The former Republican senator also participated in debates this week at the invitation of the Danube Institute, where, among other things, he stood in favor of a strict immigration policy.
We take a look at the interview conducted by the newspaper.
The time of nation-states has not passed, they continue to play an important role in the world. They make laws that they believe are in their best interest. In the United States, there are six hundred pages of legislation on migration. We have laid down in this that we welcome so many people every year. A nation is legitimately expected, and may be required, to define its immigration policy and then stick to it. As President Trump put it, a nation is not a nation without borders.
The left in both the United States and Europe is constantly working to undermine border protection measures. However, if someone comes to a country illegally, they have to face the consequences, such as being detained. (…)
My recent visit also confirmed the conviction that Hungary plays an important, historical role. Along with the majority of Americans, President Trump and I believe that we are moving in the wrong direction and that we cannot give way to the socialist-Marxist-leftist program that the media, political leadership, and intellectuals are pushing so hard in both the United States and Europe. We have to think: will this make our lives better? Or should we return to our Christian roots based on reason and law, which made Western civilization great? I think that in this regard, the Hungarian leadership and the Hungarians stand firm when they do not want to give up their freedom for the sake of Brussels or the UN. Politics should serve the interests of citizens. Unfortunately, that's not what we're seeing in the United States right now. In June, we arrested 178,000 illegal border crossers, which is almost six times more than last June's figure.
Since President Joe Biden took office, that number has been increasing. Under Trump, however, it was suppressed. We started building a border wall, almost doubled the number of immigration judges, but the most important step was when Trump got Mexico to keep people coming across the border. At the same time, I must say that Hungary is even more efficient than us, because there were many loopholes in our regulations, and the Congress did not step in to eliminate them. (…)
I really like that Hungary stands up so hard in this regard. It is important that the individual countries confront, for example, the bureaucrats in Brussels, who also wanted to tell the British what to do with fox hunting. Trump therefore admired Prime Minister Orbán, because he sympathized with the nations standing up for their rights. In the meantime, we see that the left does not respond to arguments, but instead launches a personal and vengeful attack, even though this does not correspond to either the American or the Western spirit. It's a very dangerous thing and I'm worried about it. Here in Hungary, I also met young people who told me that many of their age group sympathized with the socialists.
However, many families suffered a lot under communism. We in America or Canada have no experience in this regard, which is why it is more difficult to get our young people on our side.
