Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz defended Hungary and Poland in the EU rule of law debate.
"It is wrong that we always only talk about Hungary and Poland," Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz told the German Funke Media Group and the French daily newspaper Ouest-France in the Austrian online media - among others Die Presse, Der Standard, orf.at and oe24 - according to his Sunday reports.
The Austrian chancellor calls for a fairer attitude towards Hungary and Poland in the EU rule of law debate. He believes that maintaining the rule of law and European basic values is crucial for the survival of the European Union, but they apply equally to all states.
In recent years, Kurz has repeatedly criticized the European Union in various topics. Among other things, he mentioned the double standard of judging the member states. In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) in 2019, he spoke about the "Western arrogance that exists in some places" towards Eastern Europeans. "Anti-European thinking" occurs not only in Eastern Europe, but also in the West, he said at the time.
