The letter signed by the five factions of the European Parliament (EP), in which the signatories called on Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to withhold the resources of the EU recovery fund after the coronavirus epidemic, is a back attack on Poland, stated Gál Kinga of the Fidesz European Parliament ( EP-) representative in Brussels on Tuesday.
Speaking to Hungarian journalists, Kinga Gál emphasized: the letter written by the five left-wing party groups, the Socialists, the Greens, Renew Europe, the radical left faction (GUE-NGL) and the European People's Party (EPP), which also shifted to the left, and made public on Tuesday was born at a time when it would be necessary to express solidarity with Poland in connection with the migration emergency on the eastern border of the European Union.
He emphasized: instead of standing up for Poland and asking for financial support for the protection of the European Union's common border, the factions that signed the letter and their leaders are calling for the withdrawal of EU funds. The letter was written by those who previously drew attention to the importance of solidarity with the country suffering from migration pressure and advocated the mandatory distribution of immigrants, he recalled.
"Instead of expressing their solidarity, they do nothing but attack Poland in the back with political blackmail," he said.
Kinga Gál stated: writing the letter is unacceptable, the procedure is unqualified. He drew attention to the fact that there is no legal basis for the withholding of EU funds, because, as he said, the source of recovery is not alms, but belongs to the member countries.
He added: Hungary is exposed to political blackmail of a similar nature. When he takes a stand against the mainstream or takes steps, he also faces the threat of withdrawal of EU funds and the withholding of the recovery fund. There is almost no plenary session of the European Parliament in which all of this does not come up either in relation to Poland or Hungary, he reminded.
The European Commission should help Poland in the spirit of solidarity, instead of trying to delay the money due to it with controversial or completely unfounded questions, added the Fidesz EP representative.
In their letter, the five EP factions called on the President of the European Commission to request that the Brussels body withhold the payment of the funds from the recovery fund to Poland until Warsaw respects the principles of the rule of law, which is the basis of the EU, and does not accept the primacy of EU law or enforce finally, the judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) concerning the independence of the country's judiciary.
