The Slovak parliament did not accept the draft law submitted by the government representative Anna Záborská, which would have increased the assistance provided to expectant mothers, tightened the conditions for abortion and provided shelter accommodation for vulnerable expectant mothers, Magyar Hírlap reports.

The draft was attacked mostly by the liberal SaS party representatives, saying that the tightening violates women's rights. Pro-abortion lobby groups also joined the campaign, including Via Iuris, an NGO supported by György Soros. The decree for the protection of fetuses and mothers was sharply criticized by Dunja Mijatovic, the human rights commissioner of the Council of Europe, as she believed that it would have limited women's health rights.

After the vote, Záborská said that she was shocked by the result, as it reminded her of the spirit of communism, where the regime "brainwashed women and society with the idea that the fetus is not human, so nothing happens with abortion."
