The European Commission's stance on migration is "bizarre and shameful", tens of thousands of people are again trying to come to the continent from the south, southeast and east as a result of the Brussels policy, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, stated on Thursday in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The minister complained at the regional ministerial conference of the Migration Dialogue in Sarajevo that "Brussels is willing to finance everything that increases immigration pressure, but is not willing to support anything that would reduce it and protect European people from this threat." He emphasized that the Western Balkans is in a "strange situation" because migrants arrive there through a European Union country and want to leave in the direction of the EU. He expressed his opinion that it is impossible to solely expect that the Western Balkan states will stop migration, while "the processes have not advanced at all" in terms of European integration.
Péter Szijjártó stated: "it would be time for the European Commission to finally support the Western Balkan countries in being able to protect themselves, and thus also us, from migration pressure". In addition, according to him, progress should be made in the EU accession process as soon as possible, because "if the Western Balkans is not stable and not safe, it also fundamentally harms our national security interests".
The minister pointed out that the European Union has been facing massive waves of illegal migration since 2015, and that the issue has significantly divided the member states. According to his words, Brussels has not been able to find an effective solution to this challenge since then, instead imposing mandatory admission quotas, and although the rhetoric has changed, it continues to do so to this day. "However, we are not stupid, we understand what it is about," he said. Hungary still insists on its right to decide who can enter its territory and who cannot , and no one can take that away, as that would violate the sovereignty of our country, he emphasized. In this regard, he explained that the quotas were unanimously rejected by the Visegrad countries , which is one of the greatest results of the V4 cooperation. "If we had not been successful in this, hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants would be living in our countries today," he said.
Finally, he reported that so far this year alone, around one hundred thousand attempted border violations have taken place in Hungary , and he warned that according to reports, 30-35 thousand people leave Afghanistan every day , so the pressure can be expected to increase.
