You were wrong! In the Norwegian Post's "When Harry Met Santa" ad, Santa feels the need to come out on Christmas Eve. After all, when else, if not then, and why not Santa Claus?
Two years ago, Posten - Norway's postal service - started creating a festive advertisement every year on the occasion of Christmas, and since then the campaign has become a much-awaited part of the country's holiday season. This year's new ad caused a huge backlash as the organization decided to commemorate 50 years since the country decriminalized homosexuality.
The commercial tells the story of a man who falls in love with Santa Claus
The film is called "When Harry Met Santa", which is a pun on the title of the romantic comedy known as Harry and Sally in Hungarian.
In the film, a man discovers that Santa Claus visits his house every year, and the two men's eyes meet. In the following years, the man continues to keep an eye on Santa Claus, but Santa's visits are too short. During one visit, Santa tells him, “You snore. I will be back next year.” The following year, Santa Claus says: “I have a lot of presents to deliver. I'll be back next year. Do I look good?” The steamy love drama culminates with Santa staying a little longer one night, saying he got a little help from Norway's Posten so they can spend more time together. At the end of the film, the two men share a loving kiss. The caption at the end of the short film reads:
"In 2022, it will be 50 years since it became legal in Norway for anyone to love whoever they want."
Oda Rygh, an employee of the Norwegian LGBTQ organization FRI, told the marketing magazine Kampanje:
"For many of us, Christmas is a time spent with the ones we love, and it's great to see that Norway Post is now showing that love is for everyone, regardless of orientation or age, even if someone lives at the North Pole."
