Time magazine chose Katalin Karikó as one of the heroes of the year, the American newspaper announced.
In addition to the Hungarian scientist, other specialists working on the development of the vaccine against the coronavirus - Kizzmekia Corbett, Barney Graham and Drew Weissman - also received recognition. According to Time magazine, their unique discovery will go beyond the pandemic and have a big impact on our health and well-being.
American virologists-immunologists Kizzmekia Corbett and Barney Graham Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman achieved a breakthrough of unique importance, which enabled the preparation of vaccines against Covid-19. An innovative and highly effective mRNA-based vaccine was presented, which can affect our health and well-being long after the pandemic. The vaccines they developed represent a new path out of the epidemic and a new approach to defeating future epidemics. Vaccine manufacturers are already testing mRNA-based vaccines against influenza, which could be much more effective and safer, and will be easier to produce, the magazine's website reads.
Katalin Karikó told the magazine that she wanted to be a scientist since she was 16, and that she has been working in mRNA research for at least thirty years. According to him, his primary goal was not to develop a new vaccine, but to create a new type of therapy. The Hungarian specialist also spoke about how he was very sensitive to a letter he received from a nursing home in which he was told that after receiving the vaccines, no one died in the home of two hundred people.
