The flame of Bethlehem, which was lit from the eternal candlestick of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, arrived in several big cities, including Debrecen, and was taken from Vienna to Debrecen by the scouts of the 43rd Phoenix Scout Team.
On December 16 at four o'clock in the Debrecen Memorial Garden, representatives of the Christian communities in Debrecen took over the flame, which can reach the homes of even more families this way.
László Papp, the mayor of Debrecen, emphasized in his welcome speech what a great gift it was that the Flame of Bethlehem was able to reach the city of Debrecen through the scouts even during the time of the epidemic.
On the occasion, the city's Christian communities were represented by Fülöp Kocsis, archbishop-metropolitan of Hajdúdorog Archdiocese, Ferenc Palánki, county bishop of Debrecen-Nyíregyházi Diocese, Richárd Asztalos, director of the Debrecen Evangelical Parish, Sándor Tóth, pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church, Barnabás Sipos, it was represented by the vicar of the Szent Háromság Hungarian Orthodox Parish in Debrecen and Károly Fekete, the bishop of the Tiszántúli Reformed Church District.
After receiving the flame, Károly Fekete recalled a Christmas legend in his speech, through which he pointed to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. According to the story, the angels sang over Bethlehem: glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to people of good will. The angelic army would have gone on, but a little angel in the middle stopped singing in a muffled voice, and the others sang instead: peace on earth for people of good will. After the hymn, the leader asked the little angel why he stopped singing. He answered like this: I could sing the praises of God with a good heart, then I looked down at the ground and saw how much unrest there is among people. I couldn't say it with a good heart. And the head of the angelic faculty told the little angel that it was okay, and next year he would learn that the Jesus who was born in Bethlehem, who is being glorified, will have this as one of his dignity markers: Prince of Peace. Looking at it alone, it is worth saying: peace for people of good will.
After the story, Károly Fekete put it this way: "Today, in our world struggling with many kinds of unrest and in our hearts struggling with many kinds of unrest, peace does not only depend on us, but the Prince of Peace is the one who can lead us to peace with all our unrest."
