Men who commit violence against women are, so to speak, acting in a satanic way, Pope Francis said in a program broadcast on the Italian TV channel TG5 on Sunday night.

According to the Reuters news agency, the head of the church rarely uses such strong expressions as the ones he used this time on this topic. In the program, Pope Francis talked to three women and one man with a difficult fate.

"The number of women who are abused in their homes, often by their husbands, is very high," he answered one of the questions put to him by a woman who had been abused in her family.

"For me, it's satanic, so to speak, because they hurt a person who can't defend himself, he can only try to dodge the blows. And it's very humbling," he said

Since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic, the Pope has spoken out several times against domestic violence. As a result of the restrictions due to the epidemic, the number of these crimes has increased in many countries.

According to police statistics, about 90 acts of violence against women are committed in Italy every day, and 62 percent of them take place at home, the Reuters news agency noted.
