The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated in his New Year's message: he is optimistic that we can defeat the pandemic in 2022. The words of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus were spoken two years after the organization was notified by China about the appearance of a previously unknown disease causing pneumonia. Although the coronavirus has been a part of our everyday life since then, the head of the WHO emphasized in his speech: it is positive that there are currently many tools to combat the epidemic.
At the same time, the Director General warned that there are still inequalities in vaccine distribution.
"If we end inequalities, we will end the pandemic," he added. Last year's WHO goal of achieving a 40 percent vaccination rate in all countries of the world by the end of 2021 was not met in most of Africa. At the same time, Tedrosz Adhanom Gebreyesusz said: in order to defeat the pandemic, the organization wants to achieve in 2022 that 70 percent of the population in all countries is vaccinated by July.
