Sheriff Jody Greene in the United States refused to remove the Bible verse from the office wall. A verse in Philippians has troubled the Freedom For Religion Foundation (FFRF), which campaigns for the separation of church and state. However, they often have extreme anti-religious manifestations. Earlier, another sheriff was also complained about , who shared prayer requests, Bible quotes and other messages with religious content on his social media page.
A group of atheists filed a lawsuit in Alabama because the phrase "God help me" appears on the registration form required to vote. The Freedom From Religion Foundation helped them in the lawsuit. They wanted to make the forms suitable for those who cannot swear by God.
The same foundation, FFRF, was also the one that in 2019 wanted to get the "In God We Trust" inscriptions removed from police cars in Brevard County, Florida. However, the sheriff there refused to do so. He refused to surrender to the religious minority, if only because this phrase is the motto not only of the state of Florida, but also of the United States.
In North Carolina, the sheriff also resisted the demand of the anti-religious group. He stated that he would not renounce his Christian faith and that the poem would not be removed.
FFRF argued, however, that the quote "I can do all things in Christ" is exclusionary and represents an unconstitutional endorsement of Christianity because it alienates the 24 percent of Americans who are not religious. But Sheriff Jody Green refused. As he said, the Scriptures are very motivating for him and his colleagues. This verse is one of my favorite Bible verses, he said, adding that they work hard at the sheriff's office, and when they are preparing for a serious operation, they always ask for God's help with a group prayer. He noted that, in his opinion, there is a political motivation behind the complaint, since he has already posted countless pictures on the social media pages of the office, on which the quote can be seen, yet they only started to attack him now, as the election approached.
This is a political trick, he declared. As he said, there are people who want to see a person here whom they can control. Meanwhile, companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on motivational classes. My motivation comes from the greatest motivational speaker of all time, Jesus Christ. People need more Jesus and less politics, he noted. He added: let me say clearly: I will not renounce my position and my Christian convictions.
