Germany should return to the role of mediator between West and East, large and small member states, as Helmut Kohl did long ago, and now Emmanuel Macron, writes the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
The article published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung draws attention to the fact that certain measures taken by the Polish and Hungarian governments contradict the ideas of the rule of law, but at the same time it is becoming increasingly clear that the member states have a common set of values, but the definition of values is not uniform. The author also notes that the fight against Poland and Hungary in recent years did not correspond to the spirit of cooperation, but had a toxic effect on the internal cohesion of the EU.
The article highlights that Germany should return to the role of mediator between West and East and large and small member states, as Helmut Kohl did long ago, and now Emmanuel Macron, who recently visited Viktor Orbán, as he recognized that the unity of all member states without it, further integration is doomed to failure. The article draws attention to the fact that European unification was not created to merge European identities and values, but for the sake of cooperation between sovereign states and mutual benefits. The young Member States remind the European community that "unity in diversity" does not mean the unification of diversity.
