The number of illegal border crossings detected at the external borders of the European Union in 2021 exceeded the level before the coronavirus epidemic, the more than 200,000 cases recorded last year were the most since 2017, the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) announced on Tuesday.
The Warsaw-based EU agency highlighted in its report recording migration data for 2021 that last year's number of cases represents a 36 percent increase compared to 2019 and a 57 percent increase compared to 2020, when the restrictions introduced to curb the coronavirus epidemic had a strong deterrent effect on illegal immigration.
It was noted that last year's migration data was determined by the emergency situation at the EU's common border with Belarus.
