Cardinal Péter Erdő, Primate, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, presented a celebratory mass in connection with the memorial day of St. Margaret of Árpád-házi at the ruins of the Dominican monastery in Margitsziget. Balázs Hidvéghi, member of the European Parliament, announced the Mass on his social media page.
"Cardinal Péter Erdő, Archbishop of Esztergom, held a solemn mass on Margaret Island, at the tomb of Saint Margaret of Árpádházi. At the Mass held every January for decades, the Primate this time asked for the intercession of the Holy Princess for the unity of the Hungarian nation.
Saint Margaret IV was born in 1242, just during the Tatar invasion. As the daughter of the Hungarian king Béla and the Byzantine imperial princess Mária Laszkarisz. The parents made a vow: if God frees the country from the Tatars, they will offer the child to him. This is how Margaret ended up in the Dominican monastery in Veszprém and then on Nyulak Island (today's Margit Island), where she served as a monk until the end of her life.
At his Mass today, Cardinal Péter Erdő emphasized the importance of the family and how important it is for the different generations to understand each other. Today, when the family, the most ancient building block of society, is under attack, there is no more important message."
