Following the decision of the United States authorities, Hungarian citizens who were born outside Hungary's current borders are no longer exempt from the visa requirement, the Transylvanian Hungarian daily Krónika announced in its online edition.
Based on the blog entry Utazás a köbön, the daily wrote that the American authorities now only allow Hungarian citizens who were born in the current territory of Hungary to issue an Electronic Travel Authorization (ESTA).
According to the newspaper, the relevant decision could have been made as early as last February, but it did not appear for a long time because Washington introduced travel restrictions due to the coronavirus epidemic. Until last month, citizens of the countries belonging to the Schengen zone could not enter the territory of the United States.
The consular service of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is now drawing attention to the decision of the American authorities on its website, in the information about the conditions of entry and residence in the United States, the Krónika reported.
If Hungarian citizens born outside Hungary's current borders were to travel to America, they must apply for a visa, even if they happen to have lived in Hungary for years or decades. Hungarians living in Romania can only do this at the diplomatic representation in Bucharest, the embassy in Budapest accepts only those Hungarian citizens who live in Hungary.
