The European Union's policy in Africa and the Middle East must be radically changed, otherwise the community will become completely insignificant in these regions, and additional security risks will arise, stated Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Monday in Brussels, during the Council of Foreign Ministers.

According to the ministry's announcement, the head of the ministry called the measures of recent years in this area absolutely unsuccessful and emphasized that the EU's policy must serve a triple purpose: it must be possible for Syrian and Libyan refugees to return home, prevent new outflows, and provide assistance to two countries in not becoming migration transit states in the future. According to Péter Szijjártó, this imposes three tasks on the community. First of all, Turkey must be helped so that as many Syrians as possible can return home from there, because if new waves of immigration hit the country, it will be difficult to keep the agreement made in 2016 on the detention of migrants. In addition, instead of "inspiring waves of migration", Brussels should implement security, economic and health development programs in the Middle East and Africa. Furthermore, it should support African countries in protecting their southern borders , he said.

"If the European Union is not able to do this, if we continue the Middle East and Africa policy of recent years, then the EU will face additional security risks," he said. He added that despite a communication panel contradicting this, the European Commission continues to pursue a pro-migration policy.
