Hungary is taking a role in mitigating the humanitarian disaster in Ukraine, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade at the Hungarian-Ukrainian border crossing in Záhony, at a joint press conference with Viktor Mikita, the governor of Transcarpathia.
Péter Szijjártó emphasized that Hungary welcomes those in trouble and also sends help to Transcarpathia.
The head of the ministry pointed out that at the request of the governor of Transcarpathia, 100,000 liters of fuel were brought on Sunday to ease the fuel supply crisis in the region.
In addition, the Hungarian government, in cooperation with the Ecumenical Aid Organization, provides food, hygiene and child care products to those in need, the first shipment of 28 tons of food has already arrived, said Péter Szijjártó, adding that his ministry will make another million euros available to the aid organization on Monday morning for the preparation of the next aid shipment. .
The minister said that war is the worst scenario, war is unacceptable, it is not a solution to anything, so it must be ended. He underlined that, as a result of the war, one of the biggest humanitarian disasters developed in the region "that our generation has experienced".
Péter Szijjártó emphasized that Hungary and the Hungarian people are interested in peace, for which negotiations are necessary.
The Hungarian government wants the Russian and Ukrainian sides to sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible, he said. The head of the ministry confirmed that Hungary has offered the parties a venue for negotiations, and that he has discussed this with the leaders of the governments of both countries several times in the past two days. At the same time, Péter Szijjártó noted that the point is not where the negotiations will take place, but that they take place.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade called the governor of Subcarpathia an excellent person and friend, with whom they are in constant contact and provide him with all assistance.
He emphasized that with the 68,000 liters of gasoline and 32,000 liters of diesel fuel sent by Hungary, they help Transcarpathian health institutions, rescue services, humanitarian organizations and disaster relief. In this regard, Péter Szijjártó thanked MOL and the drivers.
The minister emphasized that all infrastructural operations were carried out on the Hungarian side of the border in order to be ready to receive refugees. From Monday, six aid stations will be opened on the Hungarian side of the border at Beregsurány, Tiszabecs, Záhony, Barabás, Lónya and Beregdaróc, he added. He emphasized that Hungary has also made all preparations to accommodate the refugees arriving in Eastern Hungary.
The head of the ministry also reported that since February 24, 66,000 people have crossed the border from Ukraine, and exemplary cooperation has been established between the Ukrainian border guard and the Hungarian police.
As a result, Hungary can help deal with the untenable situation at the Slovakian-Ukrainian border, he said, highlighting that from Sunday, the transfer of children and mothers who have been waiting there for a long time will begin to the Hungarian border, where they will be guaranteed entry into the country.
Péter Szijjártó also spoke about how Viktor Mikita brought a completely new perspective to Transcarpathia, he represents the culture of reconciliation in order for Ukrainians and Hungarians to live side by side in peace.
The people living here are dependent on each other, especially in times of trouble like the current one, he added. Péter Szijjártó noted that he is personally grateful to the governor of Subcarpathia for doing his work in cooperation with the Subcarpathian Hungarian Cultural Association (KMKSZ), and that the organization receives all the support it can get.
Viktor Mikita said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will not leave Ukraine, which encourages his people to stand up for their own country.
He emphasized that all regions and settlements of Ukraine are participating in the fight against the Russian aggressor, and the army is fighting a heroic war.
In this situation, Transcarpathia also has a duty to provide for the soldiers' families, Viktor Mikita said, and then declared that they will ensure the stability of Transcarpathia, which they are ready to protect even at the cost of their lives.
The governor of Subcarpathia thanked the Hungarian government for the humanitarian aid. He indicated that Subcarpathia has accepted 25,000 refugees from other areas of Ukraine.
János Gerevich, head of the Ukrainian-Subcarpathian branch of the Ecumenical Aid Organization, reported that Transcarpathia quickly allows aid from Hungary to cross the border, which first goes to warehouses in Ungvár and other settlements.
