On Tuesday, the lower house of the Romanian parliament also voted on the legislation that stipulates that monuments related to the Hungarian national minority must also be labeled in Hungarian.
The legislation was supported by 277 of the representatives present in the 329-member House of Representatives with 9 abstentions, there were no dissenting votes. It was also accepted by the Senate last September, so it only needs to be signed by the President in order for it to come into force.
The amendment to the law on the labeling of Hungarian monuments was submitted by Ödön Szabó, a representative of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (RMDSZ), who, according to the RMDSZ newsletter, said: this created the possibility that Hungarian-related monuments not only in settlements inhabited by Hungarians, but also in scattered also, where the number of Hungarians does not reach 20 percent, there should also be a sign in Hungarian.
According to the legal regulations that are still in force, the administrative units had to contact the Ministry of Culture for all permits, but with the amendment to the law voted on Tuesday, it will be possible to handle everything at the local level if it is not a monument.
Ödön Szabó added that two main aspects were taken into account: they wanted to reduce the bureaucracy in the area of licensing public works, and they wanted to ensure the Hungarian inscription of monuments in all settlements where they are connected to the Hungarian community.
Ödön Szabó told Szabadság: the law enters into force from its publication in the Official Gazette, so it is not binding retroactively.
