The European Union will probably wait to tighten the rule of law mechanism, which allows the freezing of some EU funds based on the state of democracy and the rule of law criteria. The implementation of punitive measures would be risky at a time when the EU states are struggling with skyrocketing energy prices, the economic consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian war, and the mass of refugees flowing into the territory of the bloc - this was reported by the Brussels edition of the Bloomberg news agency on Monday, citing high-ranking EU sources . . As it was noted, in order to strengthen the mechanism, legally concrete cases are also needed: according to commission sources, these are currently not given in the case of Poland or Hungary - the countries threatened by the mechanism.
The decision as to when and whether the rule of law mechanism should be strengthened is in the hands of President Ursula von der Leyen.
According to Bloomberg, since the countries in question border Ukraine, they are indirectly involved in the conflict, mainly due to the continuous reception of those forced to flee. Poland alone has so far opened its doors to 1.7 million Ukrainian refugees, while the Hungarian authorities have informed about the arrival of more than two hundred thousand refugees since February 24.
