Speaking to the German Sunday newspaper Welt am Sonntag, Polish Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski expressed his openness to stationing American nuclear weapons in Poland.

" We would not hold back if the Americans asked us to install nuclear weapons in Poland. This would significantly increase deterrence against Moscow, " said the Polish politician. He emphasized that the question has not yet arisen, but this may change soon. As he said, the initiative must come from the United States. In addition, he believed that it would fundamentally make sense to extend the nuclear role to NATO's eastern wing.

Kaczynski emphasized that due to the attack on Ukraine and Russia's increasing aggressiveness, Poland would welcome the increase of the US military contingent in Europe from the current 100,000 to 150,000. According to his view, 75,000 American soldiers should be permanently stationed on NATO's eastern flank, that is, along the common borders with Russia, two-thirds of them in Poland and the Baltic states.

" The soldiers of the nuclear power United States are the best deterrent so that Russia does not attack NATO member states, and they provide us with the best security, " underlined Kaczynski, who believes that NATO should take a greater role in the war in Ukraine.

" First of all, a peace mission would be necessary. Of course, this is only possible with the consent of Ukraine. And secondly, NATO members must finally start delivering the weapons that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has strongly requested, " said the Polish Deputy Prime Minister.

There are currently 2.4 million Ukrainian refugees living in Poland.
