The European Commission is providing technical support to 17 European Union member states, including Hungary, to gradually eliminate their dependence on Russian fossil fuels, in line with the EU plan for more affordable, safer and more sustainable energy, the Brussels body announced on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the technical support will help member states to identify and implement the best policy reforms and investments in areas such as diversifying energy supply, accelerating the transition to renewable energy and increasing energy efficiency in order to achieve common European aspirations.
They reminded: following the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the European Commission published a call in which it invited the member states to indicate their need for technical support. It was announced that the board evaluated and approved all requests submitted by member states. In addition to the gradual elimination of dependence on Russian fossil fuels, the support will contribute to mitigating price shocks in the medium term, among other things, by accelerating the EU's green transition, while also taking into account interregional and cross-border dimensions.
In addition to Hungary, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Croatia, Ireland, Poland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia will receive EU support.
