"It is time for the Ukrainian leaders to stop insulting Hungary and acknowledge the will of the Hungarian people," Péter Szijjártó emphasized on his Facebook page on Wednesday. At the same time, he indicated that the ambassador of Ukraine in Budapest was asked to come to the ministry in the morning.
In his post, the minister explained:
From the very beginning, we have spoken clearly about the war taking place next door: we condemn the military aggression, we stand up for Ukraine's sovereignty, we let in hundreds of thousands of refugees running for their lives, and we deliver hundreds of tons of food and other donations as part of the largest humanitarian operation in our country's history.
At the same time, the safety of Hungary and the Hungarian people is of course more important to us. This is not our war, so we want and will stay out of it. We are not willing to put the peace and security of the Hungarian people at risk, which is why we will not deliver weapons or vote for energy sanctions.
The Hungarian people expressed a clear opinion on all these issues on Sunday and made a clear decision. I think it is quite clear and easy to understand.
We understand that the Ukrainians would have had other interests, and we do not argue with them: for them, the interests of the Ukrainian people come first, and for us, the interests of the Hungarian people.
However, we cannot leave one thing unsaid: nobody can afford to criticize the democratic decision of the Hungarian people! Statements about the establishment of totalitarian systems, complicity in the war and the regrettable will of the Hungarian people are unacceptable!
It is time for the Ukrainian leaders to stop insulting Hungary and acknowledge the will of the Hungarian people.
In order to make all of this clear and understandable, we asked the Ambassador of Ukraine in Budapest to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade this morning.
