On April 13, Attila Mesterházy was a guest of ATV's Egyenes beszéd program, and he analyzed the defeat of the opposition in the studio. According to the socialist politician, not one person is responsible for the downfall of the opposition. You have to think about what kind of messages could have caught people.

While we are happy with the results in Budapest, Fidesz is 10 percent stronger than before. What the mayor talked about, the opposition's torch, shines a little dimmer compared to 2018. The MSZP was at almost 26 percent in 2018, and the opposition won 315,000 more votes than Fidesz at that time," said the former prime minister candidate.

To the question whether it is necessary to look for those responsible in such a situation, Mesterházy answered as follows: It was unacceptable that the leaders of all opposition parties did not stand behind Péter Márky-Zay.

When I lost the election, the leaders of the partner parties stood behind me in a very fair manner, they even spoke up and expressed themselves in a self-critical manner. It was a mistake not to comment on the election defeat. It is a big problem that no one takes responsibility, no one says what he himself has messed up, that no one resigns. The first step in regaining credibility in the eyes of the voters is for someone to take responsibility and resign," assessed the politician.

"It's an old game that they always want to take away the trouble with one person. In 2014 they took me away, in 2018 with Gábor Vona, now I see they are doing all this with Péter Márki-Zay. I don't think it's fair, even if he made a lot of mistakes as the joint prime ministerial candidate of the left, and he probably bears the greatest responsibility. This is not a good direction. We think of ourselves as a European party, and taking responsibility is part of European political culture. I think that the party presidents should have at least offered their resignation, and who their community re-elects - even the same person - is their right," Mesterházy continued .

He agrees with what Ágnes Kunhalmi said earlier: the Socialist Party has never had a leader who, after losing the election, started to play tricks with resignation. This is a European perception, but I don't see that this is the way to act - reflected Attila Mesterházy.

To Ferenc Gyurcsány's statement that "everyone should be Gyurcsány and never give up" , Mesterházy responded: "I agree with the second part, but I don't think I want to be Ferenc Gyurcsány, one of those is enough.

Albert Einstein once said: insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. It is also a thought-provoking defeat because there is not one reason, and the reason is not one person, as it was not before. There are many things to consider, for example, that the collaboration is not a miracle weapon, it did not bring the desired result. The political content and personal issues can also be interesting, but I believe that we were right, even if we could not convince the majority of Hungarian society of this," said Mesterházy.
