At the MITEM (Madách International Theater Meeting) festival of the National Theater - the motto of which is a quote from Imre Madách: "Bringing brotherhood to the world" - at the end of the Delhi Dance production of the Vilnius City Theater, images from the 1956 revolution and the current Ukrainian war were projected onto the montage: question: Orbán, are you sure? Meanwhile, the Lithuanian performance on the main stage, Léna's legs, or "the death of a virgin", ended with the artists carrying a sign "Hungarians, don't be indifferent" and Ukrainian flags onto the stage.
The two promotions are obviously not part of the original arrangements. In addition, most of the audience left the auditorium of the National Theater after seeing the unsolicited political action.
The National Theater issued a statement in which it is written: they took note of the message of the provocative political performances after the two Lithuanian performances in the MITEM program on April 26, 2022, the National Theater says in its statement.
The organizers of the National Theater and MITEM - although they were aware of the planned action - did not put any obstacles in front of the Lithuanian artists' free expression of opinion. We continue to believe in the importance of dialogue based on mutual respect and seeking mutual understanding. We hope that the Lithuanian colleagues, having experienced the hospitality and tolerance of Hungary and the National Theatre, will be able to reciprocate with similar openness and friendship.
It is important to emphasize that the Hungarian government and the Hungarian population provide significant financial, logistical and humanitarian assistance to hundreds of thousands of refugees from the war in Ukraine.
In addition, the National Theater organized a special Ukrainian Solidarity Day within the framework of MITEM with the participation of Ukrainian artists. We regret that the Lithuanian companies did not take notice of this and unilaterally set the attitude of the Hungarians on this issue. Wishing them further creative success, we trust that their excellent artistic qualities are combined with the ability to see clearly - concludes the announcement.
