After a forced absence of two years, on May 7, 2022, the faithful can once again make the approximately 25-kilometer pilgrimage route between Pécs and Máriagyud. This year, according to the intention of County Bishop László Felföldi, in addition to their own prayer intentions, the pilgrims will pray for peace.
"I leave you with peace. I give you my peace... When you enter a house, the first thing you say is: Peace to this house!" (cf. Jn 14,27 and Lk 10,5) - says this year's, now XIV. is the motto of the Máriagyőd Pilgrimage held every year, to which the pilgrims who set out on foot can – true to tradition – be joined by bicycle this time as well.
Pilgrims on foot gather at the border of Pécs from 6:30 a.m. at the II. It is located on János Pál Road, in the former FEMA parking lot, and at 7:30 a.m. they leave on road 58 to Szalánt and then to Máriagyűd via Tenkes Csárda. Bicycle pilgrims leave the cathedral for the shrine at 8:30 a.m. You can join the pilgrimage anywhere along the way.
The pilgrimage from Pécs to Máriagyud was organized for the first time in 2009, when they commemorated the thousand-year anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Pécs.
As they write: This year, we invite and encourage all our dear brothers and sisters to participate in the sure belief that our prayers, offerings, gratitude and requests will be heard again and again. Make a pilgrimage to Máriagyud with us this year too, so that we can pray together for peace, for our country, for our diocese, for our priests, for our families, for our patients!
Continuous medical care is provided during the pilgrimage. An ambulance and medical personnel accompany the march, and medical tents are set up at rest areas.
Pécs county bishop László Felföldi will present the celebratory mass that closes the pilgrimage at 3:00 p.m. with the concelebration of the clergy present at the shrine's open-air altar.
