The Italian politician would prefer to concentrate on grain supply, because without it the expected food crisis in Africa could trigger a migration flow of millions.
Matteo Salvini stated at his press conference in the House of Representatives in Rome that if sowing is not done in May, there will be no harvest in autumn. Without Ukrainian grain, "significant starvation can be expected on the African continent, and this will initially be a humanitarian, then a social, and finally an Italian problem, without peace there will be famine in the fall, and twenty million Africans will be ready to leave," the former interior minister said .
He added that this is why peace, which is "indispensable for Ukraine, Russia and Italy, must be established by May." At the briefing, Matteo Salvini announced that he had requested a consultation with Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who returned from Washington on Thursday, where he held talks with US President Joe Biden.
Salvini explained that the primary goal for the League is the earliest possible ceasefire, to achieve which the party urges European cooperation. If eighty billion euros are spent on weapons in Europe, achieving peace becomes complicated (..) the more weapons there are, the more distant peace is, he said.
The leader of the League, which is one of the governing parties, said that he asked Prime Minister Mario Draghi to be the standard-bearer of those urging peace. "There are those in Europe who support war, but Italy, France, and Germany must work for peace," said Salvini. He noted that surveys show that the majority of Italians also want peace.
