According to the Brussels paper, some of the EU's eastern and southern member states do not particularly mind that Viktor Orbán resists the oil embargo.
Several EU member states are not worried about Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's opposition to the EU oil embargo against Russia, writes Politico in its article.
"Slovakia and the Czech Republic also benefit from Orbán's position"
According to the Brussels paper, Slovakia and the Czech Republic also benefit from Orbán's position, since, although this is perhaps less emphasized in their statements, both states fear the catastrophic economic consequences of the embargo. In addition, the southern states of the European Union do not view the oil embargo positively either.
Politico cites Spain, Portugal, and Italy as examples, and emphasizes that in all three states it is difficult to stop the rise in energy prices.
This is a necessary but costly step to punish Moscow"
- concludes the paper.
Ukraine: This is so cynical on Orbán's part!
Politico added: Ukraine reacted with indignation to Hungary's blocking of the oil embargo, and a Ukrainian official accused the Hungarian government of "cynically" using the support for sanctions as a bargaining chip in the conflict with the European Commission over rule of law issues.
Speaking to the Brussels newspaper, several EU sources spoke about the fact that they have decided to cut off Russian gas, but this will not happen overnight. "The EU will reduce its dependence on Russian gas, we have decided that, but it is one thing if we do it in a hurry and under great pressure, and another if we have time to reduce the negative effects," an EU source told the newspaper.
