A memorial plaque was dedicated to János Arany in the Welsh city of Montgomery , which the poet immortalized in his famous ballad The Welsh Bards. In honor of Arany, the locals even brewed a special beer decorated with the poet's portrait.

In Wales, János Arany and his ballads have been commemorated several times in previous years, and in 2017, on the 200th anniversary of Arany's birth, Montgomery awarded the poet a posthumous title of honorary citizen.
Bálint Brunner, one of the main organizers and the founder of the Welsh-Hungarian cultural initiative Magyar Cymru, stated: In the 165-year history of the Welsh bards, the Welsh and Hungarian public commemorated János Arany together for the first time at Montgomery Castle, and this is a historic moment in Welsh-Hungarian relations. He announced that from now on May 14th will be Welsh-Hungarian Friendship Day every year.
