The European Commission recommends to the council, which brings together the governments of the member states, to give Ukraine a European perspective and candidate status, on the condition that the country implements a number of important reforms, Ursula Von der Leyen, the president of the Brussels body, announced on Friday.
The president said: the committee carefully evaluated Ukraine's application for accession based on the Copenhagen criteria. In his opinion
Ukraine has clearly demonstrated its commitment to European Union values,
the country has been gradually approaching the EU for years.

"We should welcome Ukraine as a candidate country, this is based on the recognition that they have done a good job, but there is still a lot to be done," emphasized Von der Leyen. As he said, the EU has had an association agreement with Ukraine since 2016, and within its framework, the country has transposed 70 percent of EU rules, standards and norms. "Based on this, the committee recommends that Ukraine be given the opportunity to become a member of the European Union. Candidate status should be granted on the condition that Kyiv takes further steps in a number of areas," he added.
