"We are aware of the problem" - this is how the Slovak Ministry of Culture reacted to Hungary's purchase of monuments from the highlands.

"We are aware of the problem," the Ministry of Culture said regarding the historic buildings purchased by foreign owners, adding that it is looking for a long-term and systemic solution. The ministry responded to the press reports that Hungary continues to purchase historic buildings in Slovakia through various companies.

"At the same time, it should be added that the state has a huge debt related to the renovation of historic buildings, the amount reached astronomical proportions during the previous governments and reached 5.5 billion euros," stated Zuzana Viciaňová, the spokesperson of the ministry.

He recalled that the current management of the ministry increased the budget for renovations to 14 million euros, and by the end of the government cycle, he wants to create a public foundation to further expand the resources.

Regarding the sales, Viciaňová said that although the state has the right of first refusal, the nationality of the buyer cannot be regulated by law.

"According to the law, the foreign owner must also take care of cultural monuments in the same way, and the monument protection offices check this within the framework of the appropriate procedure," added the spokesperson.

Following press information on the subject, which first appeared last fall, the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that it is appropriate to inform the concerned country about this type of activity taking place on its territory.

2022 Plus: The monuments will remain in the old country. And the motherland takes care of them and restores their former glory. There is no need to be afraid: we cannot take our country by the soles of our boots.
