"The deteriorating war situation in Ukraine, inflation, the war crisis knocking on the door and the energy crisis are what the leaders of Europe are working on today," said Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Kossuth radio's "Good Morning, Hungary" program. The Prime Minister reported on last week's EU summit, at which Ukraine's membership candidate status was decided.

- Becoming a member is a complicated process, you have to go through 3-4 stations. In order for the negotiations to begin, the given countries must also meet various expectations, including the Hungarian expectations that are related to the Transcarpathian Hungarian community, stated the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the fact that we were unable to get the Republic of Bosnia to be included in the group of candidates for membership. As he said, there is still a lack of understanding among Western leaders about the expansion of the Balkans and the fact that the whole of Europe needs Western Balkan integration.

In addition, the Prime Minister reminded that they did not even want to discuss a new sanctions package, as the gas embargo would have even more serious consequences for our country than an oil embargo.

The NATO summit was more difficult than the EU summit, the Prime Minister stated, we have to slowly face the realities, he underlined.

He stated that everyone is on the side of the Ukrainians, of course, because according to the public opinion – which Hungary also shares – the Russians had no reason to start an open war. But since it's a war in which tens of thousands die, we don't want to get involved in it, he added.

This is a war between two neighboring Slavic countries, and NATO is a defense alliance, he pointed out.

According to Viktor Orbán, weapons are important in a war, but the most important thing is the soldier, and he is in short supply. The Prime Minister believes that Ukraine is fighting hard, but military realities are slowly taking effect.

As he said, the question of what will happen if the Ukrainian front collapses has not yet been raised at the summit, but there has already been a lot of talk about Ukraine's heavy losses.

"I came home with the alarm bell ringing in my head the whole time," he said. - The war zone could get closer to Hungary much faster than anyone would think, which is why the speed of force development processes in Hungary must be increased two or three times - he opined.-
