From the beginning, the sovereignty of the member states had and still has two very important guarantees: one is that the final decisions are not made in the European Commission, and especially not in the European Parliament, but in the European Council, where after all the leaders democratically elected by the citizens of the member states sit, and represent their country.
The other is precisely the consensual way of decision-making, which ultimately protects the individual member states from the central powers forcing them to make decisions that are against their country's interests, either in foreign policy, taxation, border protection or enlargement, which until now have been strictly were within the jurisdiction of the Member States.
