On Wednesday, the plenary session of the European Parliament (EP) rejected the left-wing objection against the addition of the so-called taxonomy regulation containing sustainable activities, with this decision the obstacle to nuclear energy and natural gas being classified as a safe and clean energy source at the EU level was removed.
Edina Tóth, András Gyürk and Enikő Győri, Fidesz EP representatives, welcomed the results of the vote. It was emphasized that nuclear and natural gas-based investments are necessary to keep utility costs low and to achieve climate neutrality, in order to be able to maintain the security and affordability of energy supply in the long term, according to a statement sent to Magyar Hírlap by Fidesz MEPs.
After the vote, EP representative Edina Tóth highlighted: "In recent weeks, the European and Hungarian left have done everything they can to enforce their own failed green ideology and deprive nuclear energy and natural gas of their green certification, but they have not succeeded!" He believes that without nuclear energy and natural gas, the Union would be much more vulnerable to crises like the one we are currently experiencing, and the green transition would not be possible either, since renewable energy sources alone are not sufficient to meet the already increased energy demands and keep overhead costs low. .
András Gyürk pointed out that rejection was the only possible decision on the left-wing objection. "Europe is in an energy crisis, so we must firmly say no to any irresponsible proposal that aggravates the situation. With the excuse, the left attacked utility reduction and climate protection. On the other hand, thanks to the resolute stand of the Fidesz representatives, we were able to successfully create a barrier," emphasized the Fidesz EP representative.
In connection with the vote, Enikő Győri underlined: "A lot of private capital is needed to implement the green economy. For the private sector, this so-called taxonomy regulation is the leader in sustainable investments. However, most of our companies still need to be helped to become sustainable and climate neutral. We cannot shoulder the costs of this on the necks of citizens and businesses. If the left's proposal had been implemented, these businesses would never have received funds for the transition. The rules must therefore be created on the basis of realities, otherwise it is quite possible that the majority of European companies will not only become unsustainable, but even go bankrupt".
