Politico wrote this morning that the European Commission has a plan on its table that would give itself the authority to control the gas consumption of individual member states from above, if necessary. The plan also includes a legal mechanism under which it can be adopted with a qualified majority, bypassing the veto of a single member state.
Politico has learned that the European Commission (EC) intends to grant itself a new emergency power to force EU member states to reduce their gas consumption in the event that the European Union suffers from a significant shortage of gas reserves in the coming months . . According to three EU diplomats, the EC will present the plan on Wednesday, when a press conference will be held anyway regarding the winter gas savings. The online news portal stated that, based on the plan, the European Commission would have a binding say in the gas consumption of a member state.
In addition, the committee has created a legal procedure by which countries can adopt this plan with a simple majority, bypassing both the parliament and the veto of individual member states.
