There is a lot of talk these days about how dependent the country is on Russian hydrocarbons. According to Eurostat data, before the outbreak of the war, among the V4 countries, Hungary reduced its dependence on oil to the greatest extent.
As the only V4 state, our country was able to reduce its above-average dependence to below-average. The largest 12-month decrease in Hungarian dependence was measured between July 2016 and July 2017, when the value of the exposure fell by 35 percentage points. However, this decrease was also followed by an increasing phase.
From January 2013 to January 2022, the last month before the Russo-Ukraine war, all four V4 countries reduced their exposure to Russian oil. Oil imported from Russia decreased from 87 percent to 78 percent of total oil imports for Slovakia, from 44 percent to 28 percent for the Czech Republic, from 80 percent to 58 percent for Poland, and from 80 percent to 46 percent for Hungary.
Hungary was able to reduce its dependence on Russian oil to the greatest extent, by a total of 34 percentage points. The Polish index decreased by 22, the Czech by 16, and the Slovak by 9 percentage points during the examined period.
At the beginning of 2022, the Czech Republic bought Russian oil in the lowest proportion, followed by Hungary, Poland and finally Slovakia in terms of the degree of dependence. Our country was also the only V4 country that was able to reduce the level of dependency from above average to below average.
