Almost 65,000 spectators saw this year's performances of the 91-year-old Szeged Outdoor Games, the organizers of the festival informed MTI.
, many novelties, special and high-quality productions awaited the theater fans in the country's largest summer theater - organized for the first time this year by the National Theater of Szeged
From June 22 to August 21, for eight and a half weeks, fourteen productions awaited those interested in two playgrounds, a total of twenty-seven evenings.
In the spirit of the value-transmitting cultural mission of the Szeged Outdoor Games and the Szeged National Theater, great emphasis was placed on including opera and folk dance performances in the diverse repertoire. Szabadság, szeremol! was produced in co-production with the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble on Dóm tér. – The summer was opened by a dance-play called Petőfi, the Brave. In 2014, Madách Színház's successful debut in Szeged, Mamma mia! also returned four times, to the great delight of the audience.
Enthusiastic interest preceded the festival's two own performances on Dóm Square. For the first time in the festival's history, Verdi's opera La Traviata was presented with sumptuous visuals, an allegorical movement art presence, and world-class singers in the lead role. Also for the first time, as its own production, the audience at Dóm tér could see the much-awaited musical Chicago. The show was played for six nights, and more than 22,000 people were curious about the excitement of the unusual arrangement.
Attendance at the Dóm tér productions exceeded the planned number of viewers.
On the Újszeged Open-Air Stage, twice as many productions awaited theater and music lovers than usual in previous years. As a novelty of the season, the smaller stage of the festival also hosted a series of concerts, where musicians and singers such as the Boban Markovics Orkestar, the Budapest Bar, László Dés and his guests, then the Csík Orchestra, and finally Andrea Rost gave a birthday concert with friends.
Spectators of the Újszeged stage were also able to see exceptional theater performances: the large-scale Cold War story Chess, The Ballad of the Pearly Girl, a production studded with Omega hits, the exciting crime drama The Domino Murder, and the musical comedy The Ancona Lovers.
The summer programs were prepared by significant investments, and the start of the season was preceded by a comprehensive sound technical modernization on the Dóm tér main stage. Since June, the Újszeged Open-Air Stage has been protected from the changing weather by a roof structure covered with a fire and waterproof tarpaulin. The stage area was supplemented with motorized lighting structures and side walls suitable for stage walking as well as protection.
