The European Union wants to reduce the amount of electronic waste, to this end it wants to persuade manufacturers to make more durable and repairable devices, the Index said.

According to the portal, the aim of the draft proposal examined by the European Commission is to reduce the amount of electronic waste and thereby reduce carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The goal is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas by as much as if 5 million cars disappeared from the roads.

The draft mainly affects batteries and spare parts. Manufacturers must provide 15 essential parts for each device for five years from the date the device is placed on the market. These include batteries, displays, chargers, back covers, and memory card and SIM card trays.

According to the proposal, manufacturers must guarantee that the battery capacity will be 80 percent even after 1,000 charging cycles, or they must provide a spare battery for five years from the appearance of the device. An important stipulation is that software updates must not negatively affect battery life.
