Fundamental values are violated in Hungary, where the freedom of academic life is violated and the rights of the LGBTQ community are restricted, said Gwendolin Delbos-Corfiled, who compiled the report. The left-wing, Green Party politician emphasized: the time has come to call the problem by its name.
"After years, we now have to determine what is happening in Hungary. So far we have avoided this. We called it illiberal democracy, we refer to it as a democracy in difficulty, we refer to it as a system similar to democracy, and not by chance, because we felt that we would fall into a trap when we admit that Hungary is not a democracy," said Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield .
Didier Reynders, the European Commission Commissioner responsible for law enforcement, said: he agrees with most of the concerns expressed by the EP, and they remain ready to maintain the dialogue with Hungary and find a solution to the concerns. He emphasized: EU law must be observed, if this is not possible, infringement procedures must be initiated.
Hungary has to face unjust attacks - French EP representative Jean-Paul Garraud already spoke about this after the debate.
"Nation-states must be respected, but the European Union is not striving for that right now, all of this can be seen in action in the rule of law procedure against Hungary, which is a scandal. Thanks to the will of the people, Fidesz won the election for the fourth time. The European Union should listen to the Hungarian voters, but the EU is disturbed by the voice of the Hungarian people, it wants to change it"
- emphasized the French politician.
In addition to him, several people stood up for Hungary, including the EP representative of the Austrian Freedom Party:
"I find it unacceptable that the EU institutions try to discredit Hungary because it tried to protect its borders. The EU sanctions policy must be ended immediately," said Harald Vilimsky. And the Spanish representative of the European Conservatives and Reformers party family also supports Hungary.
"The left got together again and arranged a debate in order to attack Hungary. I was also a member of the delegation visiting Budapest and I came to the conclusion that the report only contains lies"
- said Jorge Buxadé Villalba.
Balázs Hidvégi emphasized that it was and always is possible to negotiate with Hungary. The Fidesz MEP added: we are ready for a compromise, if it is a meaningful compromise, and if the goal is an agreement. He emphasized:
"You can see that agreement is not the goal here. Here they want to blackmail and punish".
Balázs Hidvégi said that they reject Hungarian hatred and continue to stand up for Hungary and Hungarian interests. The European Parliament will vote on the report on Thursday.
