The Mukachevo representative body called on the local historical museum to dismantle the statue depicting the turul bird in the Munkachevo castle and replace it with the Ukrainian state coat of arms, the mukachevo.net news portal reported on Thursday.

The "trizub" - which means three-pronged harpoon in Hungarian - is the so-called small coat of arms of the Ukrainian state, a symbol dating back to the days of Kievan Rus.

The decision to replace the turul bird with the coat of arms of Ukraine was made at the meeting of the executive committee of the city council on Thursday.

The news portal reminded that the management of Munkac Castle had previously announced a tender for the development and creation of a coat of arms belonging to the state symbols of Ukraine.

The Turulmadaras monument was originally erected in 1896, the year of the millennium, and then demolished in 1924 by the Czechoslovak troops occupying Transcarpathia.

THE DESTROYED MEMORIAL WAS MADE BY IMRE PÁKH, A BUSINESSMAN FROM MUNKÁCSI, ON THE BASIS OF SURVIVING PLANS AND PHOTOS, AND WAS RESTORED IN 2008 AT THE REQUEST OF HIS FATHER, SÁNDOR PÁKH.

The one-ton Turul statue is 2.5 meters high, its wingspan is 6 meters, and the sword in its beak weighs 70 kilograms. The combined height of the pedestal and the statue is 25 meters. Together with the castle, the monument is the most popular tourist attraction in Munkács.
