The Prime Minister gives a speech in Zalaegerszeg

The Prime Minister speaks at the ceremonial handing over of the new building of the Mindszentyneum-Mindszenty József Visitor Center, which is based on the life of József Mindszenty and presents it, in Zalagerszeg, said Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister's press chief.

Traditionally, the important event of the national holiday on October 23 is the speech of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, which took place last year at the end of the peace march organized by the Civil Solidarity Forum. At the same time, the governing parties and their politicians remembered the events of 1956 at the event. Last year, the peace march was one of the first important milestones of the period before the parliamentary elections, and at the event attended by roughly half a million people, Viktor Orbán emphasized why it is important for the governing parties and their supporters to stand together.

"Because of some weak left-wing parties, we shouldn't gather so many people, but don't let that fool us! What really matters is the left's international hinterland, the money, media and power that support them. Only millions of Hungarians can overcome this together and push it out of the country"

said the Prime Minister a year ago. In 2020, due to the coronavirus epidemic, events related to the anniversary of the 1956 revolution were only held in a limited number of places or not at all.

Two years ago, Viktor Orbán commemorated the anniversary of October 23 with the recently deceased Mária Wittner, a freedom fighter from 1956, after a wreath with the inscription Gloria Victis 1956, tied with a ribbon in national colors, was placed at the emblematic site of the revolution in Budapest, during the Corvin, during the 1956 at the monument of a guy from Pest. It is well known: on October 23, the country commemorates two anniversaries, as symbolically, 33 years after the 1956 revolution, the Republic of Hungary was proclaimed on this day in 1989, which was an important milestone in the regime change. The Parliament declared October 23 an official national holiday in 1991, which was confirmed by the 2012 Basic Law.
