The city of Assen in the Netherlands has decided to relocate a public "art exhibition" with life-size images of homosexual men having group sex.
Members of the town's community voiced their objections by referring to their children.
The pornographic images were displayed as part of the Pride photo exhibition "Celebration of the Invisible" in Assen's main square, but are now planned to be moved to Brink park, also in the center of the city, regional Dutch news channel RTV Drenthe reported .
Shortly after the "art installation" was unveiled, parents - who were appalled by the obscene images on display in the city's central square - covered the panels with a cardboard banner reading "not for our children".
Hein-Jan Keijzer, the director of Pride Photo - a traveling photo exhibition that can be seen in several cities - expressed his regret that parents tried to protect their children from the sight in this way:
"It's not only a slap in the face for the organization, but it's especially painful for the people in the photos."
After all, who cares about children's feelings!
Later, after the municipality decided to move the installation, Keijzer said he understood the decision.
"Our aim is not to provoke or offend anyone, so let's examine together with the municipality how things could be done differently," Keijzer said. "We don't want to make people angry with the exhibition, because then we miss the goal," he added.
That's amazing, isn't it? Although it would have been more timely to examine the installation before placing it, it is still beautiful. And not a bit cynical, just full of good intentions. How many children have run into the attraction on the main square so far?
Jaap de Jonge, president of the Asser Regenboog Alliance (ARA), a pro-LGBT organization, also understands the city's reaction, saying:
“We want to increase the visibility of these groups. Of course, the manner in which we do this is debatable. Whether the new location is more suitable is not yet known," added de Jonge.
"Now the pictures are right in front of the entrance to the Drents museum, where school classes walk by all day."
Well. We hope that the responsible city leaders have carefully considered this location before installing life-size photos of invisible gays having group sex.
