Former President János Áder talked about energy security and the importance of developing the electricity network with Csaba Nemes, the head of the sustainable development department of the Hungarian Energy and Public Utilities Regulatory Office, in the broadcast of his Blue Planet podcast published on Monday, which can already be viewed on the most popular video sharing site.

In the program, which was made even before the publication of the solar panel decree, Csaba Nemes agreed with János Áder's statement that, along with water, energy will be the most important issue in the coming months and years.

As an example, the former head of state mentioned that due to this year's drought, the operation of hydropower plants and the cooling of thermal power plants with water also encountered difficulties.

Csaba Nemes talked about how

In Hungary, 60 percent of apartments depend on gas, and converting these properties to electric heating takes "not three years". If everyone were to switch to this type of heating, it would require the production of another block of energy in Paks, he added.

János Áder pointed out: despite the fact that solar collectors were placed on the roofs of many houses and many smaller solar power plants were put into operation, "it is as if the development of the network has fallen behind".

Responding to this, Csaba Nemes said that Spain, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Belgium are struggling with the same problem. The Hungarian energy strategy of 2018 did not count on such a rise in solar panels, he noted.

Due to energy security considerations, he argued in favor of public and private network developments starting as soon as possible. However, he indicated that

their execution was previously hindered by the pandemic, and currently by supply chains that have stalled due to the war in Ukraine and the lack of professionals.

János Áder called it crucial that saving and improving efficiency should also be characteristic of household energy consumption. Joining the proposal of the former head of state, Csaba Nemes said that long-term energy saving requires investments, among which he highlighted the replacement of windows and doors and insulation.

The former president of the republic asked his interlocutor whether nuclear energy is indispensable for achieving the Paris climate goals. According to Csaba Nemes, certainly not, and he added:

nuclear power plants must be developed, there is already a shortage of electricity in the EU

In conclusion, János Áder said that if the entire European Union becomes climate neutral by 2050, but the United States and China do not follow this path and increase emissions, then according to his formulation, we will not achieve very much globally.
