From now on, in Romania, it is mandatory to have inscriptions in Hungarian on displayed commemorative plaques, public works, and monuments that are connected to the Hungarian community in some way.
The state president announced the amendment to the law, according to which these works must also be captioned in the languages of the minorities, according to the announcement of the RMDSZ on Monday.
Ödön Szabó, deputy faction leader of the RMDSZ House of Representatives, explained that "this is a special law", so the regulation will be mandatory not only in those settlements where more than 20 percent of Hungarians live, but also in all settlements where works of art or commemorative plaques related to the Hungarian minority are placed. or to privately owned space. According to the announcement, another significant innovation of the law amendment is that it largely decentralizes the procedure for displaying works of this kind: approval in Bucharest can now be done with the approval of the county institutions of the Ministry of Culture or the zonal bodies of the National Committee for Public Monuments.
Ödön Szabó also pointed out that, according to the plans, the creation of an internet interface on which all public works can be found is part of the law, and that the inscriptions would contain so-called QR codes, which would provide additional information to those interested.
